Here are three interesting things you might not know about 17-round 9mm magazines:
1. Compatibility with Other Models
Many 17-round 9mm magazines are designed with cross-compatibility in mind. For instance, a Glock 17 magazine (designed for the Glock 17) will often work in a Glock 19, though it sticks out slightly. This is handy for people who own multiple Glock models or similar platforms. However, some aftermarket magazines claim broader compatibility, but it’s worth checking for proper fit and function before relying on them in a critical situation.
2. Spring Wear and Maintenance
One often overlooked aspect of 17-round magazines is how spring tension can affect the magazine’s longevity and performance. Over time, as the magazine is loaded and unloaded, the spring can weaken. While modern springs in high-quality magazines are designed to last, they can eventually lose some of their tension, leading to feeding issues. Periodic unloading and reloading, or storing the magazines with a round in the chamber rather than fully loaded, can help preserve the spring’s life.
3. Impact of Capacity on Concealed Carry
Although a 17-round magazine might seem like a “full-size” choice, it can also offer some concealed carry advantages depending on the firearm. For instance, certain full-size pistols like the Sig P320 or Beretta 92 with a 17-round magazine may still be reasonably concealable in an inside-the-waistband (IWB) holster or a shoulder holster, especially if the user is larger in stature. Some people even prefer a slightly longer magazine for added comfort and control, as it allows for a fuller grip. It’s an interesting trade-off: more capacity without a significant increase in size, at least for certain body types and carrying methods.
These are just a few angles that might surprise you when thinking about a common 17-round magazine. There’s a lot of versatility and nuance to these little components that many don’t consider!
